LBCC: A Pesticide-Free Campus

What you may not notice though, or at the very least, not pay much attention to, is the bright yellow dandelions that lay among the tulips, or the green leafy plants that pop up in between cracks in the sidewalk. At the start of 2012, LBCC began its transition into a fully organic landscape management campus. While this decision was the result of a state law commonly referred to as the Oregon IPM (Integrated Pest Management), LBCC kept the ball rolling by going above and beyond what the law required. According to lead groundskeeper Sam Bruch, “This law greatly limits the type of chemical pesticides allowable for use on school grounds… the law also states that pesticides are not to be used for purely aesthetic reasons.” While they

Courtney Bailey participated in all of the Earth Day events, happy that she was able to bring home a plant!                      Students sit and discuss different ways to become more eco-friendly in the                      quad this past Thursday following the Earth Day events where they got to plant flowers.   Earth Day booths at LBCC help students get their hands dirty and connect with nature.

Alexis Mathewson  "Eventually, I would like to make something that would make people happy" was one of the first things out of Alexis's mouth during our interview. That beautiful concept is a great way of describing Alexis. She is a freshman at LBCC majoring in computer software and computer engineering. She will eventually transfer to a bigger university; OIT or OSU, and is excited about pursuing her career.  She has always known she wanted to go into computer sciences, and was enthusiastic talking about her future, mentioning that a goal she has is to move to Japan and work in a tech company. Alexis loves the staff at LBCC "They're not afraid to help you, even if you have a stupid question."                                              Alexis Lundy "If you asked me when I was four, I would have told you I wanted to be a

Photographer of the week Sebastiao Salgado was born in 1944 in Aimores Brazil. He had grown up in an environment where the forest he was raised in was twice the size of France, with a quarter of the population. Sebastiao was surrounded by nature and poverty his whole life, giving insight onto his his work. He describes his connection with photography as his "mother tongue" which shows how deep the connection really is. He has started his career as a economist, until the 1970's when he decided to become a photographer. What stands out most in Sebastiaos photos is the emotions they evoke. He is a conscious photographer, shooting pictures of poverty, war, famine, political oppression, and industrialization. His claim to fame came with his willingness to show you the reality of the situations many people find themselves in. His work is true and honest and very emo

Christopher Batman   Christopher Batman is in his second term of his freshman year, majoring in Machine Tools. Christopher has spent the past 5 years in the Army, and is now transitioning from the structured life that the army provides, to the loose setting of a college campus. He has spent most of his free time in the veteran center at LBCC, and it has been a major safe haven for him. He explains how great it is to have a place to connect with people who are used to the lifestyle of the military; 5 a.m wake ups and the fast paced and "craziness you see in the real army". With a wake up time of 6 a.m Christopher is excited to have a class this term at 9 a.m, where last term all of his classes started at 1 p.m. and he was bored all day. His favorite class last term was Comm 111 with Jacob Hood, and he's excited to see what this term has to offer. Elisa Kanoff Elisa Kanoff is second year, duel enrolled at LBCC and OSU. She is heading towards a major in Fish
